Most of us know Natalie Portman as Princes Leia, as the ballerina from Blak Swan, as the actress who shaved her head in V for Vendetta, or as the girl who lived in a Walmart, depending on what type of movies we’re into. What most of us don’t know is that she went to Harvard, or at least I didn’t. And I also didn’t know that she is pretty wise.
While I was on Facebook a few weeks ago I saw a post about Natalie delivering the Commencement Speech to Harvard’s 2015 graduates, which caught my attention so I decided to watch it. I knew it had to be an interesting speech, but I never expected it to move me like it did.
I decided to enlist my favourite quotes from her speech because, although I’m not a Harvard graduate student, and I’m not an Oscar wining actress (so far), I felt strongly identified with her words.
1.- “It’s not about quantity, it’s about taking pleasure in the perfection and beauty of the particular.”
2.- “If your reasons are your own, your path, even if it’s a strange and clumsy path, will be wholly yours and you will control the rewards of what you do by making your internal life fulfilling.”
3.- “Sometimes your insecurities and your inexperience may lead you to embrace other people’s expectations standards or values. But you can harness that inexperience to carve out your own path. One that it’s free of the burden of knowing how things are supposed to be.”
4.- “Grab the good people around you and don’t let them go.”
5.- “It’s a cliche, because it’s true, that helping others ends up helping you more than anyone. Getting out of your own concerns and caring about someone else’s life for a while reminds you that you are not the center of the universe.”
6.- “Achievement is wonderful when you know why you are doing it, and when you don’t know,it can be a terrible trap.”
7.- “You can never be the best technically… the only thing you can be the best at is developing your own self.”
8.- “The inexperience that in college made me feel insecure and made me play by other’s rules, now was making me actually take risks I couldn’t even realise were risks.”
All these quotes are my favourite because they resonated with me in one way or another. In ways that you may probably don’t understand yet because you don’t know that much about me, but hopefully soon you will. If you are moved by at least one of these quotes, I strongly suggest you to watch the whole speech. Believe me, you will enjoy it.
